Prediction: Next Mobile App Trend #nerdmusings

Update #2: 3/31. QR codes are now covered in major media; everyone’s talking about it. Dude. I am SOOOO Internet psychic! Giving myself #nerdprops

Update: Looks like it’d be happening sooner than I predicted. Check out this piece from Mashable. Wow, I’m #internetpsychic!

In 2011 (or perhaps ’12), experience based QRC LBS apps to collect for tangibles should start hitting the market. Scanning with QRCs is a simple one-off action. Think LIKEing on Facebook. Or checking-in via Foursqaure. There are various theories as to why QRCs haven’t taken off in the U.S., though it seems pretty clear. This market was’t ready. Now it is, as smartphones have finally reached the critical mass and now we wait for QR Code scanners to be built into handsets.

Oh man, the possibilities are endless.

I’d like to see SCVNGR jump on that, utilizing the Foursquare/Facebook APIs. Or retail/lifestyle/health/beauty apps that reconciles with QRCs i.e. scanning item(s) and tracking with data visualization for electronics, food, restaurants, fashion, household items, etc., etc. Those kind of apps could be taken a step further to accrue loyalty points for tangibles.

It’d also be great if Microsoft wasn’t as proprietary. They have so many neat one offs e.g. Surface and Microsoft Tags but it’s a shame users have to log in with their MSN IDs to retrieve data. I’ve exchanged info via both but it’s such a hassle to access the data that I don’t. Haven’t. And would never. Sorry, Microsoft. Get with the times!

Still have more to say but will end it about here. Maybe I’ll update more at home. (Ya right.)

ps: please pardon any typos or grammatical errors as this is sent via phone. These days, it’s easier to quickly punch out a blog with a phone than jot down ideas then write at home.
